Speaker 1: You're gonna have a mission statement as your center
00:00:01
.
00:00:01
You're gonna have something that you're gonna abide to, so
00:00:06
make your content that reflects your mission statement.
00:00:09
All your content.
00:00:09
When you're creating your content, have your mission
00:00:11
statement in mind.
00:00:12
This creates trust and curiosity, because your audience
00:00:17
most of the time is gonna be your parents, your young parents
00:00:19
, your grandparents you know your things like that.
00:00:21
So you want to create that trust with everything that you
00:00:24
post.
00:00:25
So, as long as your content reflects your mission statement
00:00:28
and what your organization abides by, you'll be able to
00:00:31
create that relationship.
00:00:33
["school Town?
00:00:35
Speaker 3: Programming and Education"].
00:00:38
Hello, hello everyone.
00:00:39
Welcome to School After Hours podcast, where we talk about all
00:00:42
of things related to out-of-school town programming
00:00:44
and education.
00:00:44
I am your host, jay Lee, and today we're gonna talk about
00:00:49
using social media to build an online presence for your
00:00:52
out-of-school program.
00:00:53
To help us with this topic, we have Marquia Baker and Navey
00:00:57
Johnson from NM Legacy Marketing .
00:01:00
They're gonna be sharing some marketing strategies as well as
00:01:04
some dos and don'ts for social media.
00:01:06
So you know we can get the gist of everything and make sure
00:01:08
that we're doing this correctly.
00:01:10
All right, so, but before we go into our main interview, let's
00:01:14
go ahead and jump into our community corner.
00:01:17
Community Corner is a segment of the show that allows guests on
00:01:20
myself to share tips, advice or information on a specific topic
00:01:24
with young people, families or community members.
00:01:27
Without further ado, let's go ahead and get into our Community
00:01:32
Corner conversation.
00:01:33
All right, everyone.
00:01:34
This is our Community Corner section.
00:01:36
We have Navey and Marquia here for us and they're just gonna
00:01:40
give us some tips about what could communities to do to help
00:01:43
with their social media marketing.
00:01:44
So, navey and Marquia, my question for you all for
00:01:47
Community Corner is this what are your top three tips?
00:01:52
What are your top three tips for after-school programs that
00:01:56
are new to social media and try to build their brand.
00:02:01
Speaker 1: All right.
00:02:01
So when you're new to social media, it can seem really scary
00:02:04
because you're like, how am I gonna get all these people you
00:02:07
know to like me and to follow us ?
00:02:09
You know, et cetera, et cetera.
00:02:10
But don't think too much into it.
00:02:12
Social media is a gross thing.
00:02:14
You're gonna grow over time.
00:02:15
But as long as you're consistent, you're gonna be just
00:02:17
fine.
00:02:17
So that kind of goes to when my next thing is you're gonna have
00:02:22
a mission statement as your center.
00:02:23
You're gonna have something that you're gonna abide to.
00:02:27
So make your content that reflects your mission statement.
00:02:31
You know all your content.
00:02:32
When you're creating your content, have your mission
00:02:34
statement in mind.
00:02:35
This creates trust and curiosity because your audience
00:02:40
most of the time is gonna be your parents, your young parents
00:02:42
, your grandparents.
00:02:43
You know your things like that.
00:02:44
So you want to create that trust with everything that you
00:02:47
post.
00:02:48
So as long as your content reflects your mission statement
00:02:51
and what your organization abides by, you'll be able to
00:02:54
create that relationship.
00:02:56
And also, you know this is an after-school program, so make
00:02:58
sure that you're getting permission from the parents to
00:03:02
have their children online and things like that.
00:03:04
You don't wanna anger anybody, you don't want any legal trouble
00:03:07
.
00:03:07
You don't wanna lose a student because the parent is upset or
00:03:10
anything like that.
00:03:10
So at registration or at admission, however you wanna do
00:03:15
it, make sure there's some type of document signed that says,
00:03:17
hey, we're gonna use your children's pictures on our
00:03:20
socials, on our print media.
00:03:22
You know what happened.
00:03:23
That way there's no surprises.
00:03:25
And lastly, when you're a new page, it's recommended to post
00:03:29
every day.
00:03:30
You wanna post every day to build that consistency, to build
00:03:33
that momentum, and you want to not just, of course, post just
00:03:36
regular still pictures, but have fun, get footage, make some
00:03:39
reels Because it's an after-school program, there
00:03:41
should be a lot of activities that you should be able to get
00:03:44
content on, so you can meet carousels, you know any type of
00:03:47
reels or field trips or any of the programs.
00:03:49
You know staff helping with homework, whatever you wanna put
00:03:52
up there, but have fun with it, don't think about it too much,
00:03:56
but just make sure that you're consistent and reflecting your
00:03:59
mission at the same time.
00:04:02
Speaker 3: Mm-hmm, good stuff, good stuff, boy.
00:04:04
Especially about that consent part.
00:04:05
Oh boy, he puts somebody's child on social media.
00:04:08
It's a whole problem without the permission.
00:04:10
Oh trust, have been through it and it is not a good thing.
00:04:12
But with that being said, we're gonna go ahead and jump into
00:04:17
our interview questions.
00:04:18
["dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"].
00:04:21
All right, everybody, we have arrived at our interview portion
00:04:25
of the show.
00:04:26
So, like I said, we had Navy and Marquette here with us, and
00:04:29
we're gonna be talking about social media and how you can use
00:04:32
it for branding your organization, but also branding
00:04:35
yourself as a resource for anyone in the community that may
00:04:39
need it.
00:04:39
So, with that being said, we're gonna go ahead and dive into a
00:04:43
small introduction of Navy and Marquette so we could know a
00:04:48
little bit about them, but also that their business as well.
00:04:50
So, ladies, good to have you here today, good to be here,
00:04:56
thank you and we know social media is a big thing, especially
00:04:59
it's becoming more popular for marketing and after-school
00:05:02
programs.
00:05:02
But us being me being a millennial and closer to the end
00:05:07
of being a millennial that far in Social media wasn't a really
00:05:11
big thing when I was growing up.
00:05:13
So learning the ins and outs, how to use it, all those things
00:05:18
could be a little bit intimidating sometimes, if I'm
00:05:20
allowed to be honest.
00:05:21
So I'm happy that we are having this conversation so just to
00:05:25
get us started, go ahead and tell us a little bit about
00:05:28
yourselves and then we'll go ahead and go a little bit deeper
00:05:30
in the conversation.
00:05:32
Speaker 1: Okay, well, to start again, I'm Navy, I'm one half of
00:05:36
In-N-Lagacy and we've been in business together since February
00:05:39
2022.
00:05:40
We're going on two years in and I've been in the digital
00:05:44
marketing space and social media space for quite a while, but I
00:05:47
guess it will be about six years going on six years now, since
00:05:50
2018.
00:05:51
And it's been a wonderful blessing.
00:05:52
Of course, like you said, it needs to do.
00:05:55
Everything changes.
00:05:56
Social media changes constantly , you know.
00:05:58
So it's a swinging pendulum, but it's all about growth and
00:06:03
figuring out what works and figuring out your audience and
00:06:05
things like that.
00:06:06
And because of my storytelling background, my writing
00:06:09
background and a bit of journalism background, it all
00:06:11
kind of just tied together.
00:06:13
You know, Making content is kind of like chasing the story
00:06:16
and then you also have to speak to who you want to speak to, so
00:06:19
you have to customize your content to go toward the right
00:06:22
audience and things like that.
00:06:23
So it's a nice space, a nice place to be in.
00:06:28
Speaker 3: Nice Markey.
00:06:30
Yes, yes, yes.
00:06:32
Speaker 2: So again, I'm Markey Baker, the other half of NM,
00:06:36
Legacy, marketing, like I said, having the degree in the
00:06:40
education space of journalism stuff.
00:06:42
But getting into the workforce and developing that interest in
00:06:45
the marketing side definitely started right after graduation.
00:06:48
So my interest began probably in 07 or 08, but I started
00:06:52
really taking it seriously when I'm telling you like a pandemic
00:06:54
just really put us all in this space where it was like okay,
00:06:57
this is a time to either jump or not.
00:07:00
And so I really started to really kind of like try to get
00:07:04
out of that imposter syndrome piece in 2020.
00:07:07
And thanks to my boo over here, she like really it was like
00:07:10
look, this is you can do this.
00:07:11
And I really started to take it very seriously at that point.
00:07:19
And, as Nady stated, we use social media so much and I think
00:07:23
that's why, for me, like it became a bit even more
00:07:27
interesting because I was always sharing what I was doing
00:07:29
anyways and wanting to basically show people how I'm doing it,
00:07:33
how I'm finding different things and putting it in a way that
00:07:36
they would take it and understand, because everyone
00:07:40
doesn't take in information the same.
00:07:42
But we're all using social media and so the wonderful part about
00:07:46
what we do and about what we have an opportunity to help
00:07:50
other people do, is put your message out in a way that your
00:07:53
followers in your community will receive it, and so being able
00:07:58
to do that, being able to be really creative and really being
00:08:00
able to show people what I know is just like the best part
00:08:04
about what we do.
00:08:05
That's like my favorite part of doing it and being able to show
00:08:08
people.
00:08:08
It's not intimidating, don't be afraid, we got you, we're going
00:08:11
to tell you, and once you make it simple for the net like oh,
00:08:14
that's it, I'm like, yeah, so you know it can be a little
00:08:20
intimidating, but we always hear to try to lighten that load and
00:08:23
make it less scary.
00:08:25
Speaker 3: All right, I appreciate it.
00:08:26
I definitely do Because, like I said before, like I don't know,
00:08:30
as you go on, you figure it out and you work it out for
00:08:33
yourself.
00:08:34
So that brings me to my first question for you.
00:08:36
So when after school programs are choosing a social media
00:08:40
platform to build their brand right, what should they take
00:08:45
into consideration before using a platform?
00:08:48
Speaker 1: Well, I think first thing is you have to know that
00:08:51
you don't need every platform.
00:08:53
You know you got your big four.
00:08:54
You got your Facebook, instagram, your ex and I guess
00:08:59
it would be tick top now.
00:09:00
I guess that's the product before.
00:09:01
I was going to say LinkedIn, but things are changing, like we
00:09:05
said.
00:09:06
But you don't need every platform, because every platform
00:09:08
might not be made for your audience.
00:09:10
For after school programs in particular, you might want to
00:09:13
hang out on Instagram to TikTok and Facebook.
00:09:15
Facebook because you know that's where your parents will
00:09:18
be, that's where grandparents will be.
00:09:20
You know things like that.
00:09:21
Then you have your Instagram, where you're younger, your
00:09:24
millennial parents will be, and then even TikTok.
00:09:26
You know where your millennial parents will be, and so you just
00:09:29
have to kind of know you know what's the best platform or the
00:09:32
strongest platform to promote your after school program.
00:09:34
And because you know it's still talking to parents, it's your
00:09:38
audience, but you still want to cater to a more I don't want to
00:09:42
say a more childlike platform, but you don't want to go on like
00:09:45
a professional platform, what do you can but to better promote
00:09:49
and talk to the audience that you want to speak to.
00:09:52
Instagram, facebook and TikTok can be the strongest because of
00:09:55
the type of content that you're going to post.
00:09:57
You're going to post a lot of, you know, after school programs.
00:10:00
You're going to post a lot of things with the children.
00:10:01
You're going to post, you know, staff helping with homework.
00:10:04
You're going to post the kids playing together.
00:10:06
You know you're going to post that type of content and those
00:10:08
type of visuals and they tend to go across better on Instagram
00:10:12
and TikTok and Facebook and things like that.
00:10:15
So just know you don't have to use every single platform and
00:10:19
even if you don't want to get on TikTok right now, facebook and
00:10:23
Instagram will be just fine.
00:10:24
And because you can connect those two and, as we mentioned
00:10:27
before, you can build a content calendar on your Meta Business
00:10:30
Suite on Facebook and connect your Instagram to your Facebook
00:10:33
page and schedule that one out.
00:10:35
So that way you kill two birds with one stone on two very
00:10:39
strong still platforms.
00:10:40
So just know you don't have to do it all.
00:10:43
You can focus on, you know, just to two good, strong
00:10:47
platforms and just make sure your content is appealing.
00:10:52
Speaker 3: I don't know that's right.
00:10:52
So, before we go deeper into this conversation, let's go
00:10:55
ahead and take a quick break, everybody.
00:10:57
Go ahead, get your snacks, get your treats, go ahead and take a
00:11:00
moment to yourself, taking all this good information, and come
00:11:03
right back because we are not done.
00:11:04
We have so much more information to share with y'all.
00:11:06
All right, see you in a minute.
00:11:08
Are you a program director or thinking of starting a program?
00:11:12
Maybe you need new curriculum that focuses on character
00:11:16
development or technical skills.
00:11:18
Maybe you need help establishing effective program
00:11:21
logistics to have an impactful program culture, or, overall,
00:11:26
you just need a program evaluation.
00:11:27
Well, school after hours consulting case.
00:11:31
Here to help Contact us at schoolafterhourscom and our
00:11:36
contact information is in the show notes.
00:11:38
Hope to hear from you soon.
00:11:40
Hello everyone, welcome back, welcome back to school after
00:11:43
hours podcast.
00:11:44
We have Navy and Marquette here with us from NM Legacy Marketing
00:11:49
and we are talking about social media strategies to help build
00:11:52
your brand awareness but also market yourselves at the same
00:11:55
time.
00:11:55
So we're gonna go ahead and finish going into our interview.
00:11:58
We had great advice in the first half about what platforms
00:12:02
to use when you are trying to bring yourself, and the thing is
00:12:06
you don't gotta use all of them .
00:12:08
Narrow it down to one.
00:12:09
Start there.
00:12:10
So with that information we're gonna go ahead and get a little
00:12:13
bit more.
00:12:14
So my next question for you all is this what is a social media
00:12:19
strategy and how can it be used to promote app school
00:12:23
programming?
00:12:25
Speaker 2: Alright, so great question.
00:12:26
So first let's start with what the social media strategy is.
00:12:29
So, basically, it's simply a plan on how you're gonna share
00:12:32
your information, whether it's a product or service or event or
00:12:37
activity, and it doesn't have to be formally like on a breakdown
00:12:41
of a calendar unless you want to especially when you're trying
00:12:44
to organize your thoughts but just in your head saying,
00:12:47
alright, I'm gonna post this on this day.
00:12:48
That that's a social media strategy.
00:12:49
You have one.
00:12:50
It's just you're maybe not calling it that, you're just
00:12:52
saying this is what my plan, this is what I want to do.
00:12:53
That's a social media strategy.
00:12:55
And when you're using it in the marketing space, it's just like
00:12:59
any other marketing plan.
00:13:00
Just like if you were to market and say I'm gonna drop four
00:13:03
commercials on such and such day .
00:13:05
I'm gonna put a billboard on this street because all these
00:13:07
cars gonna go on this part of the highway, right.
00:13:10
It's the same thing in the social media space, which
00:13:12
requires research, right, and or bringing on people that have
00:13:16
done the research and can say, hey, your audience is on social
00:13:19
media on in five o'clock in the afternoon.
00:13:22
We may want to drop this event this day, or this day is not as
00:13:26
busy so we might want to post this in the morning so everybody
00:13:29
has enough time to watch the look at the feed.
00:13:31
So it's simply having that strategy and saying, alright,
00:13:35
this is how I want to get the information out, to get the most
00:13:37
interactions and the most reach .
00:13:39
And that could be for a personal brand, like you said.
00:13:42
It could be for a business, it could be for an event.
00:13:45
Some people just simply do for parties.
00:13:47
What does everybody do?
00:13:48
They start dropping flyers.
00:13:49
What Thursday, friday, saturday , sometimes Sunday?
00:13:52
Because they know these are the times we're gonna be looking at
00:13:55
it and the weekend is coming up and I want the nabye tickets in
00:13:58
a batch.
00:13:58
You know that kind of thing.
00:13:59
So that's simply a social media strategy.
00:14:03
Now, the way that after-suit programs can use it to their
00:14:06
benefit is really giving a deeper look into the program.
00:14:10
So making sure the benefits of the program they can share.
00:14:16
That's an opportunity for parents.
00:14:18
People here on the straight from the parents mouth.
00:14:19
Hey, this has been my experience.
00:14:21
My son's been going to this program for X amount of years
00:14:24
and, of course, getting consent, asking the parents hey, do you
00:14:26
mind?
00:14:27
You know, reviews go a long way and, of course, whether it's
00:14:31
text, whether they just write an email, you can throw that and
00:14:33
make it a graphic.
00:14:34
Or whether it's literally stopping a parent at events and,
00:14:37
hey, do you mind saying a couple sentences on?
00:14:39
So that's.
00:14:40
That's an easy way to get the word about how impactful your
00:14:44
business or your program is being, without you having to do
00:14:47
a whole lot of thought, because it's coming straight from your
00:14:51
attendees used to show the different activities, maybe kind
00:14:55
of talked about it because people want to know okay my
00:14:57
child over there.
00:14:58
What are they gonna be doing?
00:14:58
And a lot of times, right, our attention spans are so short.
00:15:02
I'm a mom, we're moms, we don't want, a lot of times we don't
00:15:06
want to read the list of it anymore.
00:15:07
Right, we want to see it.
00:15:08
You guys, you know, and it used to be what they used to do.
00:15:10
In short, short, show pictures of kids running around throwing
00:15:12
balls.
00:15:12
You can translate that over into socials.
00:15:15
What are the kids gonna be doing?
00:15:16
What are they gonna be eating?
00:15:18
You know, to me, specialists, the summertime, okay, my kids me
00:15:21
there all day what kind of food are they eating?
00:15:23
You know things like that.
00:15:25
So really show them what exactly the kids are gonna be
00:15:27
doing or that you they're gonna be doing.
00:15:30
And then we love to hear, we love backstories from leaders.
00:15:34
You know, it doesn't have to be the CEO, because you know a lot
00:15:36
of people.
00:15:37
Sometimes they don't want to go and be in a camera, but it
00:15:39
could be someone that represents or doing a nice.
00:15:41
You know, just saying, this is how we got started.
00:15:43
Our passion is chosen, got a yada yada, yada yada.
00:15:46
You know, and we're talking short clips because we're we
00:15:49
talked about, our attention spans are short, but these are
00:15:52
easy ways to share about the organization or the afterschool
00:15:57
program, but and be impactful without it being a whole lot of
00:16:02
oh my god, what are we gonna do?
00:16:03
That takes the pressure off, but that's the way that you can
00:16:06
really be impactful and really maximize the use of social media
00:16:09
right and building that word.
00:16:14
Speaker 3: In doing that, are there key components that they
00:16:17
should like focus on?
00:16:19
Because I know that you mentioned like post time, like
00:16:22
when is your audience most active on social media?
00:16:25
So look at your post time, with being that being one of those
00:16:28
things.
00:16:28
What are you actually going to be doing to be a little bit more
00:16:32
visual?
00:16:32
So, are there specific components to their strategy,
00:16:35
shit that they should use or look at?
00:16:38
Speaker 2: absolutely so key components, of course, like you
00:16:40
just mentioned, utilizing that the analytics to see, like, when
00:16:44
are your followers the most active?
00:16:46
So, if you know, I mean maybe talk about this a lot when
00:16:49
people are off work a lot of times that five afternoon, when
00:16:51
they're getting off work, is a good time to drop some
00:16:55
announcements or things that they have going on.
00:16:57
So posting times are important and the different types of
00:17:00
content and like maybe can talk about a little bit earlier too,
00:17:03
right?
00:17:03
Not everybody is gonna watch a reel.
00:17:05
Some people may want to pitch it.
00:17:08
Some people like to swipe on a carousel which is multiple
00:17:11
pitches, you know.
00:17:12
So it's always important to have a variety.
00:17:15
If you don't post every day, on those few days that you post,
00:17:19
add a variety.
00:17:19
So, because a lot of people may not respond to a bunch of still
00:17:22
posts.
00:17:22
If that's, you know, all you do , you may only reach one part of
00:17:25
your, of your market and maybe feel free to chime in, because
00:17:29
on any other additions to that, that's pretty much it.
00:17:34
Speaker 1: Just keep consistent.
00:17:36
You know, utilize those, the posting times, a lot of times on
00:17:39
a schedule, like like Metas or like Zoho.
00:17:42
If you're using any type of schedule, it will tell you your
00:17:45
most active engagement time so you can follow that as your
00:17:47
roadmap.
00:17:48
But that's it.
00:17:49
You know, just keep your content aligned with your
00:17:51
mission and make sure you always know your why with everything
00:17:54
that you post.
00:17:55
And that's pretty much it, okay .
00:17:58
Speaker 3: Thank you for sharing that, because that is something
00:18:01
that I don't think we've always taken to consideration, because
00:18:03
we're so post, post, post, do, do, do.
00:18:04
But if you're posting something that is important at like 1
00:18:10
o'clock and you know your people don't look at it until about
00:18:14
what 30 is really going to be Yep, are we really looking at it
00:18:20
for real?
00:18:20
So a lot of things that are taking place on social media,
00:18:25
like selling, has become another additional thing, especially on
00:18:29
Instagram, products and merch and all those other things.
00:18:32
So I wanted to actually wall for especially the fundraising
00:18:35
part of programming is what are some ways programs can use
00:18:40
social media to, like raise money for some of the things
00:18:43
that they may be doing or what to do in the future?
00:18:46
Speaker 1: I'm also, you know, social.
00:18:47
Is your message, your message, right?
00:18:49
You know that's how you get the news out nowadays.
00:18:51
You know that's the fastest way you know to get information out
00:18:54
there.
00:18:55
So you definitely want to showcase it.
00:18:58
You know to showcase what it is .
00:18:59
You should do it and you can start your go from me
00:19:02
kickstarter and you know place that link in your bio or place
00:19:05
that link in your chat.
00:19:06
However, you want to do it, but what you want to keep in mind is
00:19:09
you want to be transparent about you need to be transparent
00:19:12
about the fundraiser what it is that you're raising money for.
00:19:15
You know, because you want to get this building.
00:19:17
Are you, you know, putting money into scholarship programs?
00:19:20
You know you want to be transparent about what it is
00:19:24
that you're fundraising for and show the progression.
00:19:26
That's what you will put on social media as far as helping
00:19:29
your parents to see what's really going on and again, as we
00:19:32
talked about before, building a trust.
00:19:34
Once you build that trust and they see okay, you know they're
00:19:37
not going to just take my money and run.
00:19:38
You know they're actually no higher contract is to fix the
00:19:41
roof on the building.
00:19:42
They're actually getting these kids the backpacks of school
00:19:45
supplies that they need.
00:19:46
You want to, you know, show your progression of all your
00:19:49
fundraising goals, no matter what it is, and you should
00:19:52
social media to do that.
00:19:54
If you are raising money for a field trip, so I to implement a
00:19:57
program or anything like that, just to make that note on the
00:20:00
social space and maybe do a countdown.
00:20:02
You know you say, hey, you know that kind of also create a
00:20:06
sense of urgency to.
00:20:07
But you can make a countdown and say, hey, we need X amount
00:20:11
of dollars by March 13th and the countdown is on and whoever
00:20:16
gives gives us that $300 might win something or something.
00:20:19
You can make it fun, make it engaging, make it so people feel
00:20:22
like they have an incentive, once you build that relationship
00:20:25
with them, you know, to donate money, and so that's pretty much
00:20:29
how you can use the social space.
00:20:32
And, like I said, if you have a place where they can give money,
00:20:35
like your cash up, you might have a, you know, a cash up for
00:20:37
your establishment.
00:20:38
You might have a go fund me for specific things or a
00:20:41
Kickstarter to launch a new program, anything like that.
00:20:44
You want to also keep in mind who your audience.
00:20:47
You know they might not be able to give thousands of dollars on
00:20:51
hand.
00:20:51
You got a lot of moms and families you know as your
00:20:54
audience members, so they might can do like $10 here there, so
00:20:58
you just also have to be mindful of what you ask for as well,
00:21:01
when that'll help them determine whether they can give or how
00:21:04
much time they want to put in.
00:21:05
Whatever it is that you need, so that transparency is golden
00:21:09
when it comes to raising money and, of course, don't be afraid
00:21:12
to showcase the progression of the fundraising.
00:21:17
Speaker 3: Very true, very true.
00:21:18
So, talking about that, let's go ahead and talk about this
00:21:22
family and community engagement portion, because that is part of
00:21:26
it, your fundraising.
00:21:26
You're trying to touch the people and let them know what
00:21:28
you need.
00:21:28
Also, how can social media be used for family and community
00:21:33
engagement outside of fundraising?
00:21:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, so that really doesn't go away to transition
00:21:38
out of that, because one of the bigger components that can be
00:21:42
used to create that community and family engagement is just
00:21:45
sharing updates.
00:21:46
Sharing updates and information .
00:21:48
Those platforms can be used, like I said, for the updates for
00:21:51
the fundraising, especially, of course, not just when places
00:21:54
are closed and like that, but different events that are coming
00:21:57
up.
00:21:57
That's like the main place to do that.
00:21:59
It could be notifications, it could be something changes, it
00:22:01
could be hey, we need volunteers .
00:22:03
You know how many times do they need volunteers and people do
00:22:08
not post.
00:22:08
I'm telling that's literally how it showed up at the farmers
00:22:11
market because people like, oh so don't know each other.
00:22:14
No, I saw them Facebook and said the deal, I mean, you know,
00:22:19
because you know, right, sometimes these after school
00:22:21
programs are nonprofits, right, and you're like how in the world
00:22:24
put that thing on Facebook or Instagram and say volunteers
00:22:28
needed, ask people to share, because that's the way to get
00:22:31
these families and get the community involved.
00:22:33
Social media is the resource now for people that mean that's
00:22:37
looking for volunteer opportunities.
00:22:39
They're not googling anymore, they're going to Facebook and
00:22:41
Instagram and they're putting in volunteer RBA.
00:22:43
They're putting in volunteer in Hureko County volunteer,
00:22:46
chesterfield, and they're looking for people like you.
00:22:49
They're looking for daycares and summer camp and all that.
00:22:52
They're not googling it anymore .
00:22:54
You know what I mean.
00:22:55
Outside of asking friends, they may go to the social services
00:22:58
website.
00:22:58
They're looking on Instagram and Facebook, and that's how the
00:23:02
families can stay in the know what's going on.
00:23:03
That's how you keep everyone engaged and then that's where
00:23:07
you can also encourage them to share.
00:23:09
00:23:10
People do it all the time.
00:23:12
Do not be afraid of asking your followers to share your post.
00:23:14
You know what I mean, because even if you don't hit your
00:23:17
target audience, every person engages.
00:23:19
You're automatically connected with their audience the moment
00:23:22
they share your stuff and you're exposed to a 500, 600 more
00:23:26
people that never knew you existed, all because you told
00:23:29
them to share your post.
00:23:30
Nice, so that's the first one.
00:23:32
The second one is and it's kind of the same thing for
00:23:35
facilitating communication and collaboration.
00:23:37
So that goes along with that.
00:23:39
We need you volunteers or our job openings.
00:23:41
Hey, we're looking for more counselors.
00:23:44
We're looking for interns.
00:23:46
That's a perfect time where we're asking for, people are
00:23:48
asking for interns right, especially in the summer or in
00:23:50
the after school.
00:23:51
Looking for anyone that's looking for volunteer credits is
00:23:54
trying to get into organizations.
00:23:55
I'm a product sorority.
00:23:56
I was the reason why I know about volunteer opportunities
00:23:58
back in the day.
00:23:59
Right, we all knew somebody, but I also was volunteer hauling
00:24:01
.
00:24:01
These days, you know, it's a little different.
00:24:04
You know somebody that needs volunteer credit and they just
00:24:06
happen to see it on their feed.
00:24:08
Oh, let me connect them with so and so and so.
00:24:10
Let me send them this post, and it doesn't have to be a still
00:24:12
post.
00:24:13
Sometimes it's literally showing a video of a volunteer, one
00:24:16
volunteer with us.
00:24:16
Look at what they're doing, because what do people say,
00:24:19
right, when I volunteer, what are we doing?
00:24:20
You know they don't want to do the bait and switch, but they're
00:24:23
seeing what I want to do that with kids.
00:24:24
I can give people some food.
00:24:26
I could run around and play baseball or basketball with them
00:24:28
.
00:24:28
I, you know I can do that.
00:24:30
That's the perfect way to recruit is literally showing
00:24:33
people what they're gonna be doing.
00:24:35
So those are some ways to really connect and collaborate
00:24:38
on that.
00:24:39
And then just showing achievements.
00:24:41
My son attended a basketball program.
00:24:42
He was in people different preschool also, but they showed
00:24:45
the kids graduating Didn't do an , a kindergarten graduation, any
00:24:49
type of awards.
00:24:50
Or there's a basketball program oh, I team one.
00:24:53
Blah, blah blah, different type of tournaments and stuff like
00:24:56
that.
00:24:56
Parents like to see their children, the children like to
00:24:58
see themselves, and it also is like, oh well, I want my child
00:25:02
to participate, I'm looking for another basketball tournament.
00:25:04
You know what I mean.
00:25:05
Or they may be a part of that, that program, and didn't know
00:25:08
that they had Basketball tournaments or different type of
00:25:10
competitions.
00:25:11
You know, that really lets the community know that you route,
00:25:14
that we rally around these children and that there's other
00:25:17
ways for them to achieve Different things, because if
00:25:19
they don't want to go to like a bigger one and I think those
00:25:23
bigger organizations are the only ones that they can get
00:25:24
awards and stuff that so these are some ways to support the
00:25:27
community.
00:25:27
Community can support the children.
00:25:28
It gives great engagement because what are they saying?
00:25:31
Congratulations.
00:25:32
All that engagement just boosts up the post, where it starts to
00:25:37
show up on other people's algorithms.
00:25:38
So we're on people's pages rather.
00:25:41
So those are some ways that they can Use that to maximize
00:25:45
their exposure and really utilize social media for their
00:25:47
benefit.
00:25:49
Speaker 3: No, that's right.
00:25:50
Well, for all the wonderful things that you gave us today,
00:25:53
thank you so much, but we are not done yet.
00:25:55
Yeah, we have to go ahead and jump into our professionals
00:25:58
lounge.
00:25:58
Professionals lounge is a segment of the show that allows
00:26:01
guests to share advice with other Practitioners in the OST
00:26:05
and youth development field about how they can begin growing
00:26:09
their gifts and talents, but also develop themselves as
00:26:12
professionals in the field.
00:26:13
Here's our professionals lounge conversation.
00:26:16
Welcome to the end of our show.
00:26:19
I know we've had such a great time getting so much information
00:26:22
, but I'm gonna go ahead and wrap this up.
00:26:24
So, for professionals lounge, here's my question.
00:26:27
For Navy and Marquia, my question is what are some things
00:26:31
that should not be done on social media?
00:26:34
You know there is this thing called etiquette, but like we
00:26:45
need to put that out every like, so you should not, because you
00:26:49
know, feel like etiquette is important, we miss, miss
00:26:52
sometimes.
00:26:53
Speaker 1: Oh, we can really understand that.
00:26:54
We actually did a whole little segment on social media
00:26:57
etiquette on our page and a legacy on Instagram shames plug.
00:27:01
So go ahead and follow us.
00:27:03
But we already did.
00:27:04
We have a social media etiquette series and if we were
00:27:07
very excited about this question because we would like we talk
00:27:09
about this.
00:27:10
So, first rule don't flood the feet.
00:27:12
Do not flood the feet.
00:27:14
Don't overpower your friends feeds with all of these posts,
00:27:17
because it frustrates people and then they end up on following
00:27:21
or muting you or something Like that, and you don't want them to
00:27:23
hide your good stuff, you know.
00:27:24
So, instead of flooding a feed or anything like that, build a
00:27:28
carousel, like Marquia mentioned before.
00:27:30
A carousel is a series of multiple posts is a very good
00:27:34
way to get engagement because people are gonna swipe through.
00:27:37
They might save the posts that they like within the bunch or
00:27:41
anything like that, or you know they'll save it for later to
00:27:43
come back to it.
00:27:44
But carousels are really cool because it allows you to post
00:27:48
all those pictures at one time and you can create.
00:27:50
Create a story out of it, create a theme out of it, things
00:27:53
like that.
00:27:53
Even put little arrows on it so they can know to keep swiping,
00:27:56
make it look cool, you know, but it's, it's a really easy way to
00:27:59
get engagement and still use multiple pictures and images or
00:28:03
just footage Without having to, you know, constantly post and
00:28:06
flood the feed to where a lot of your stuff gets missed that way
00:28:10
.
00:28:11
And then we also said this before at the top of the hour,
00:28:13
but we're gonna say it again Don't post children without
00:28:16
consent of their parents.
00:28:17
That's the most important thing For after school program, any
00:28:21
type of child development programs.
00:28:22
Just make sure you get that content slip signed, so that way
00:28:26
again, it's no problems or anything like that.
00:28:28
And the last thing that you could do, one of my last things
00:28:32
that you could do is and we this might be kind of hard to do,
00:28:37
but it can be done showcase your programs with visuals.
00:28:39
Like I've said children reading , staff helping with schoolwork,
00:28:44
anything like that.
00:28:45
You can show them better than you can tell them on these
00:28:47
platforms.
00:28:48
So try not to be too, too promotional, but life-like, you
00:28:53
know, because you want to create that, actually that relatable
00:28:56
pool, and to do that you need you need the visuals.
00:28:58
You know where visual people with short attention span, so we
00:29:01
just want to see it one day.
00:29:03
But do your best to explain it quickly and, you know, short way
00:29:06
in the caption to where it's not.
00:29:08
You know a whole little novella down there.
00:29:10
You know, keep it sweet, simple , kind of do it like a narrative
00:29:14
type of content strategy and show and don't tell too much.
00:29:18
So those are my three etiquette tips.
00:29:20
Marquette, you got some.
00:29:22
Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
00:29:23
So the first one I have is Especially for those and this
00:29:26
can goes for after school programs or those that just have
00:29:29
businesses you want to make sure you're keeping a balance of
00:29:32
your personal content and your business content separate,
00:29:37
unless it aligns with the company's brand.
00:29:39
So we have people that write you run your own Afterschool
00:29:42
program or what have you, but then we've definitely seen where
00:29:47
you know, sometimes you slip in a personal that doesn't really
00:29:49
have anything to do with the brand and but, and you're kind
00:29:52
of running it like it's your personal page, but then you're
00:29:55
trying to promote your business or after school program at the
00:29:58
same time.
00:29:58
You might and it, you know you may seem like it's a lot but
00:30:01
it's really not, but you may want to.
00:30:03
You want to separate that and have a personal page where you
00:30:06
can post all your personal random quirky stuff and then the
00:30:10
other one just be your brand.
00:30:11
But of course, if it aligns with that brand so say, you run
00:30:15
the afterschool program and you have children, you have children
00:30:17
of your own.
00:30:18
If your children are participating in stuff with the
00:30:20
program and you throw a picture, then that can maybe align with
00:30:23
that brand because they're actually doing what the
00:30:25
afterschool program does or what the program offers, versus just
00:30:28
like randomly Throw out a picture of your kids on there
00:30:32
but it doesn't align with the brand.
00:30:33
So you want to kind of make sure you are keeping that
00:30:36
separate, because your brand and your, your program is its own
00:30:39
entity.
00:30:39
So you don't want to cause any confusion again.
00:30:42
Like maybe said, you want to make sure your content is
00:30:44
aligning with that mission so that it doesn't throw off anyone
00:30:48
that's following and then there's like a random people
00:30:49
like wait, I thought this was the schools Instagram, but it's
00:30:52
really yours and you're just promoting the afterschool
00:30:55
program at the same time.
00:30:56
You might want to look into, especially if you know you're
00:30:59
going to consistently post for that brand.
00:31:00
You might want to that at that point I'm gonna have to set up a
00:31:03
separate Instagram for it or socials and the way Instagram
00:31:06
and Facebook is set up, you can easily toggle between the two
00:31:10
and that way you're posting as your business and then you can
00:31:12
switch over and post back as yourself.
00:31:14
We do it all the time.
00:31:15
So that's the first one that I had.
00:31:20
The second one is making sure you're engaging with your
00:31:22
followers.
00:31:22
When people that follow you when they're talking in the
00:31:25
comments, you please respond back.
00:31:28
Say something about, even if it's oh, these are
00:31:30
congratulations kids.
00:31:31
You can say thank you for all your kind words or what have you
00:31:36
?
00:31:36
A lot of people ask questions in those comments.
00:31:38
Then not only that, actually the people that your brand
00:31:41
follows engage with their posts, because A that keeps the
00:31:45
engagement going both ways.
00:31:46
That also keeps your pulse on the afterschool program streets.
00:31:51
Because we tell everybody, whatever brand you, a number of
00:31:55
the people that you follow should be people that's in your
00:31:57
niche, so you should be following other programs or
00:32:02
schools or anybody that's in your market.
00:32:05
They should be some of the people that you're seeing on
00:32:07
your feed.
00:32:08
Then you should be engaging with them as well.
00:32:11
Like some of their posts, engage with some of their,
00:32:14
especially if it's interesting, share some of their stuff.
00:32:17
It doesn't take away from your brand.
00:32:20
Instagram.
00:32:21
Socialism is a great space where it benefits you to support
00:32:24
other people, if that makes sense, because sometimes that's
00:32:28
the one reason why we wonder why is he my stuff doing?
00:32:31
Well, well, who's engaging with your stuff?
00:32:32
Because that one part is not just posting, it's getting the
00:32:38
engagement and sometimes it boils down to who are you
00:32:42
engaging with, right?
00:32:43
So don't lose that piece of.
00:32:47
I need to be seeing what's.
00:32:49
Number one keep your finger on the pulse on what's going on in
00:32:51
these afterschool program streets.
00:32:53
I'm gonna say that In our case, we keep a pulse on who was
00:32:55
going on the social media streets, but whatever your brand
00:32:57
is, keep a pulse on.
00:32:58
Like your podcaster, I'm sure you follow other.
00:33:01
You keep a pulse on what the podcaster you know what I'm
00:33:03
saying.
00:33:04
So, because that's how you keep an idea of what's going on.
00:33:08
But also engage, because that you'd be surprised who engages
00:33:11
with you All.
00:33:12
Because you like to engage your stuff, that stuff can really
00:33:14
really matter.
00:33:15
Especially, start now and then lastly okay, so people should
00:33:19
know this, but we still see this which is putting links in the
00:33:22
captions on Instagram.
00:33:24
Instagram does not allow a hyperlink in the captions, so
00:33:28
when you all are making Instagram posts, one way to get
00:33:31
around this is, of course, in the caption saying please click
00:33:34
the link in our bio and or make a video or a reel of how to get
00:33:38
to the link to register your children, because hyperlinks
00:33:41
work on Facebook but it does not translate over.
00:33:44
Unfortunately, instagram does not have this feature, but
00:33:46
there's still a lot of people that, and sometimes you don't
00:33:48
know right, cause you're just posting.
00:33:49
You just copy and paste what you put on Instagram.
00:33:51
Hyperlinks do not work in the captions, even if you put it in
00:33:55
as a comment.
00:33:55
Make a simple video saying hey, this is how you find us.
00:34:00
We literally made a video the other day it wasn't very long
00:34:03
how to go to our link in our bio and click the calendar in the
00:34:06
book and apply with us.
00:34:07
It's great content, but it also shows that you, you are still
00:34:11
showing people how to get to it because the hyperlinks do not
00:34:14
work.
00:34:15
So that's the only other other one I have.
00:34:19
Speaker 1: And then I say well, ladies.
00:34:20
Speaker 3: Thank you for being on the show.
